HEPA-for-the-world.info is a resource and archive of design musings and printable part files for HEPA air filtration systems. The goal is to spur the creation of simple, cost effective HEPA air filter systems everywhere. The designs are based on various mounting schemes for cheap, commercially available HEPA vacuum cleaner bags and easily sourced materials.
Designs will be offered from a simple plastic tote box based filter box (very scalable) to a bookcase based appliance along with manufacturing drawings. 3D STL files for mounting hubs and other components are presented for download.
A scheme is presented which has the potential to improve the exchange rate of room volume air by creating what could be envisioned as a virtual open patio door. Constructed of light weight , inexpensive plastic drain pipe with snap together fittings these units are meant to be mounted on the wall or routed along base boards and as risers in room corners. By providing an extended surface area, low flow, low pressure air inlet the intent is to get a large percentage of room air moving toward the surface of the drain pipe to be inhaled and passed through the HEPA filter. This concept needs a high accuracy fluid dynamics study to validate ( or repudiate ) the effectiveness of the scheme.
When possible a sample of each design will be built and documented for reproduction by DIYs and workshop based builders.
All 3D parts for printing have simple geometries that any 3D printer can make. The intent is that any low cost, filament based printer will be sufficient to make the parts needed. <<??>>
Links to support materials are provided for reference. They cover a number of concepts from the CDC air filtration guidance to the details in a wood shop dust collection system installation guide.
We challenge the manufacturers of the bulk HEPA bag material to design and market permeable fabric ducts incorporating HEPA filter material. There are several companies that specialize in flexible cloth ducting systems that could be updated with HEPA material and be easily installed as unobtrusive ceiling mounted filter systems. It is not difficult to envision long HEPA tubes arranged on the ceiling to provide a wide area cascade of HEPA filtered air.
